Its geographical location is 21°-58′-10″ N ~ 27°-31′-15″ N latitude and between 82°-19′-50″ E ~ 88°-17′-40″ E longitude. Its average elevation above sea level is 173 Feet.

It is bounded by Nepal to the north and by the Indian states of West Bengal to the northeast and Uttar Pradesh to the west. In November 2000 the new state of Jharkhand was created from Bihar’s southern provinces and now forms the state’s southern and southeastern borders.

Rivers Ganga, Son, Bagmati, Kosi, Budhi Gandak, and Falgu are the major rivers in the state. Central parts of Bihar have some small hills, for example, the Rajgir hills.
